Western Toledo Preparatory Academy Expanding to Meet Community Demand New Satellite Campus Opening in Spring Meadows

Toledo, August 1–Western Toledo Preparatory Academy (WTPA) is expanding its current campus and adding a satellite school this fall to meet demand from the community. WTPA ranks in the top 25% of Ohio charter schools and received five stars for progress from the Ohio Department of Education last school year. The K-8 school is managed by ACCEL Schools, a leading public charter school management organization working to address educational inequities through its nationwide network of 85 schools.

The satellite campus, Western Toledo Preparatory Academy at Spring Meadows, is located at the site of the former iLEAD campus at 1615 Timberwolf Drive in Holland. The new K-8 campus will offer a well-rounded college preparatory educational model that prioritizes students’ social-emotional wellness. Registration is open for the start of school this August.

In addition to the new school, the original WTPA campus is expanding to meet the needs of a growing student body. Work is underway currently to add a baseball and softball field. Construction has started on a hinged bridge for commercial vehicles to access the campus from Hill Avenue, limiting the impact of construction on the neighboring community. Following the bridge completion, the school will add six new modular classrooms with a slated completion of this December.

Prospective families are invited to attend Parent Information & Game Night at the Spring Meadows campus this Thursday, August 3 from 4-6pm to find out more information about the school expansion and enroll for the upcoming school year. To RSVP visit westerntoledosm.org/events.

WTPA Wins Three 2023 Accely Awards

Congratulations to Western Toledo Preparatory Academy for winning three Accely awards at the annual leadership summit held this July. The school was recognized for strong academic performance and enrollment – taking home the coveted Gold School award.

Recognizing the hard work and success of our schools and school leaders is an important tradition at ACCEL Schools. While schools across the country are still recovering from challenges related to the pandemic, we have seen a surge in success from schools serving historically underrecognized communities.

“We are mission driven to make quality education available to all children regardless of geographic location or life circumstances,” said ACCEL Schools CEO Ron Packard who presented the awards on July 17. “It is an honor to recognize the staff and leadership who are putting ACCEL’s ideals into action and creating positive change in the lives of the students and communities who need it most.”

WTPA received the following 2023 ACCELY awards:

Outstanding Student Enrollment
Maintaining strong student enrollment is important to the overall health of a school. Western Toledo Preparatory Academy did an excellent job of attracting and retaining students in 2023.

Outstanding Growth in Math
WTPA was recognized as having some of the highest PI scores in Math from like-kind schools in the ACCEL Schools network.

Gold School Award
The Gold School Award recognizes the highest achieving schools in the ACCEL network. This prestigious award went to 10 schools in 2023 that demonstrated strong academic outcomes as well as positive enrollment growth.

Congratulations to every member of our CHATA community for contributing to our success in 2023. We are honored to accept these Accely awards on behalf of our entire team and look forward to another extraordinary school year.

Benefits of Sports in Schools

Did you know that less than one-quarter (24%) of children 6 to 17 years of age participate in 60 minutes of physical activity every day? That means most children aren’t getting the exercise they need to prevent serious health issues like heart disease and Type 2 diabetes. And they’re missing out on the academic benefits too, since exercise is linked to better focus, memory, and classroom performance.

The CDC recommends 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical exercise a day for school-aged children. When kids are active at school, they are healthier, happier, and more successful in school. Here are a few of the benefits of sports and physical education in schools:

  • Improved attention
  • Better mood and memory
  • Lower risk of depression
  • More time on task
  • Fewer absences
  • Better behavior
  • Better bone & heart health
  • Healthier weight

Source: CDC Healthy Schools

Our experienced school leaders strongly believe in these benefits and implement them throughout the school day.
